Oral Health Can Be As Simple As H2O

July 25, 2023

In our increasingly complex world, some important things remain remarkably simple. Take water, for example — that vital fluid that makes up about 60 percent of our bodies. For all the advances in science, technology and gadgetry, there’s practically nothing as essential to our oral health as good old H2O.

Our friendly dentist at Lake Street Dental wants to remind our patients that no matter how many new beverages promise to make us stronger and healthier, nothing tops water when it comes to our teeth and gums. Why? Read on!

Drinking water, especially after a meal, acts as a cleanser for your teeth and mouth, washing away leftover particles of food. Juices, sports drinks and soda may taste good, but they leave your teeth coated with a residue of sugar and even acids that lead to tooth decay.

Water promotes a healthy flow of saliva, which is your mouth’s first line of defense against cavities by washing away food particles and helping you swallow. Water helps prevent dry mouth, which causes tooth decay.

Because it does not contain any sweeteners, water is calorie-free, unlike sweetened drinks that can contribute to weight gain. Drinking water can actually help curb hunger by giving your stomach a feeling of fullness.

Of course, it’s of the utmost importance to make sure that you’re drinking water that contains fluoride, the naturally occurring mineral often referred to as nature’s cavity fighter. Fluoride has been added to many community water sources starting in the late-1960s, and has had a dramatic effect on preventing tooth decay. While some brands of bottled water contain fluoride, not all do, so check the labels before making your purchase.

Our dentist at Lake Street Dental hopes you’ve been able to drink this all in, because we’ve said a mouthful! Please contact our office to schedule an appointment or for more tips on achieving optimal oral health!
